The Caregiver’s Gift

When you were a child, did he stand by your side?

Did she feed you, and wipe away your tears that you cried?

Was it a sister? A brother? A friend?

You knew they’d be there for you, right to the end.

Or is he a child, with needs of his own?

A sweet little girl you can’t leave alone?

You’re a mother, a father, a daughter, a son-

A maid and a doctor, all rolled into one.

How many times have you changed all your plans

Or wished you could somehow grow seventeen hands?

With mountains of laundry, and bills left to pay.

You wish there were 48 hours in a day

You’ve fought lonely battles, while holding your ground,

But are you alone? No. Just look around.

When you are down, and feeling the blues,

It helps to know others who walk in your shoes.

When your cherished companion responds with a smile.

You know that your efforts are truly worthwhile.

Your gift is returned, and it helps you stand tall.

Unconditional love is the best gift at all.
